November 29, 2010 - Hyderabad
Member of Parliament from Kadapa YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has resigned from the Congress Party. Jagan along with his mother YS Vijayamma has submitted their resignations today. This is the first step fired by Jagan Mohan Reddy who is on his way to launch his own party. Jagan Mohan Reddy resigned as the Member of Parliament, while Vijayamma resigned as Congress MLA from Pulivendula Assembly seat. He faxed his resignation letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar which has been accepted by the Speaker. Unofficial reports say that Jagan has the backing of at least 5 MPs.
Just after the announcement of his resignation, Jagan's supporters from all over the state have started their celebrations. Hundreds of supporters gathered at his residence in Hyderabad. His vehicle had a tough time in moving out. They condemned the way in which AICC has treated Jagan. Effigies of Sonia Gandhi have been burnt.
Few supporters of Jagan who met him today said that..
Jagan isn't wishing the collapse of the Government that his father has built. Reports say that Jagan has suggested the Congress MLAs and MPs who are with him not to resign and wait till 2014 when the term of the Congress-led Government comes to an end. Jagan's next move is expected in the next two days from Cuddapah.
Jagan has been at war with Congress over the last few weeks. It may be recalled that Jagan owned Sakshi channel has aired analysis on some of the Congress leaders including Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Rahul Gandhi, which did not go well the party high command. Jagan's uncle YS Vivekananda Reddy had earlier met Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi and told the media that he will try to patch things up between Congress high command and Jagan.
Jagan's Open Letter
Jagan while resigning from the Party Membership, released a 5-page Open letter to Congress President Ms. Sonia Gandhi, which he has released to the media. In the Open letter, Jagan mentioned the circumstances under which he resigned from the party. Jagan accused that he has been repeatedly insulted by the AICC in the last 14 months since the demise of former Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy. Jagan also appealed to the MLA's not to resign, however, many of the Jagan supporters in the party are expected to submit their resignations later today. About 18 MLAs and MLCs are known to be in Jagan's camp.Jagan alleged that the AICC has been trying to create a wedge in their family by luring his uncle YS Vivekananda Reddy with a Minister post. "Why did you create division in the family? What crime had we committed?", Jagan said. "I and my mother are resigning from the primary membership of the Congress Party. After going through all this, we have no other option,". "You tried to isolate me hence I am going alone. I appeal to my followers not to resign,"
Jagan said that the Congress High Command has given a differential treatment to him. He cited the examples of PRP President Chiranjeevi and MLC Vivekananda Reddy getting an appointment with Sonia Gandhi almost instantly while he has to wait for many days.
He said that the doubts in regard to the death of his father aren't cleared yet.
YSR Congress
With Jagan deciding to move out of Congress, it is most likely he will be forming a party on his own. It is learnt that the new party will be named "YSR Congress", wherein, YSR stands for Youth Sramik Ryot. It is also yet to see if he will continue the Odarpu Yatra or not in the next few days. The reaction of other Congress leaders is yet to be seen. Many politicians from Anantapur and Chittoor are reported to have been calling Jagan and expressing their support to him. Initial reports say that Jagan is likely to announce his new party formation in the first week of December.Reaction from Leaders
